European shipowners and fuel producers join forces and launch Clean Maritime Fuels Platform

Access to clean maritime fuels is a top priority for the decarbonisation of the shipping sector. The recently published Draghi report on the Future of European Competitiveness identifies shipping as one of the most difficult sectors to decarbonise, requiring around 40 billion in annual investments between 2031 and 2050. The report highlights that, while the EU is a world leader in sustainable renewable and low-carbon fuels for the decarbonisation of transport, it has limited installed capacity and planned production. The EU needs to start building a supply chain for clean fuels, or the costs of meeting its targets will be significant.

Finnlines to launch a new freight service from Finland to Sheerness, UK

Ro-roFinnlines is set to launch a new freight service from Finland to London Medway located in Sheerness, with further connections available to Belgium, Spain, and Ireland. The first arrival will take place on 23 September 2024. The new service is part of Finnlines’ strategy to improve service sustainability and route network, and it will be operated with three Finneco-class vessels calling London Medway once a week.

Oma Baatbyggeri to build two new aluminium electric ferries for Torghatten

FerryTorghatten and Oma Baatbyggeri signed a contract for the construction of two new electrically operated ferries for Finnmark, built in aluminium. The ferries will be 49 metres long, have a beam of 13 metres and will carry 95 passengers and 28 cars. Delivery will be in Q4 2025.

Total freight volumes in August 2024 were 7.4% above 2023 and up 4.4% adjusted for the addition of Strait of Gibraltar routes in 2024 and closure of the Calais-Tilbury route in 2023. The number of passengers in August 2024 was 68.7% above 2023 and up 9.1% adjusted for the addition of the Strait of Gibraltar routes.

RMC delivered SPIRIT OF TASMANIA IV to TT-Line Tasmania

FerryThe Tasmanian Spirit of Tasmania (TT-Line Company PTY Ltd.) ordered two ro-pax ferries from Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC) for the challenging open sea route to Australia. The first vessel, SPIRIT OF TASMANIA IV, has now been completed and delivered. The second, SPIRIT OF TASMANIA V, was launched in July.

Attica Holdings reports first financial results after integration of ANEK

FinanceAttica Holdings S.A. announced its results for the first half of 2024, integrating for the first time the business operation of ANEK LINES S.A. and its subsidiaries ('ANEK') for the entire period, following the completion of its merger by absorption on 4 December 2023. The group's revenue rose by 29.9%, reaching EUR 317.2 million, up from EUR 244.3 million. The consolidated EBITDA amounted to EUR 19.5 million, compared to EUR 47.5 million in the first half of 2023, while the consolidated losses after taxes amounted to EUR 4.5 million, compared to earnings of EUR 3.3 million in the first half of 2023.

Condor Ferries sees strong increase in 2024 summer sailings

Condor Ferries reported a +14% Y-O-Y increase in overall network carryings during this year’s peak travel period (14 July – 3 September 2024), representing an increase in carryings of 26,874 compared to 2023. Of particular significance is the increase in passengers carried to and from the island of Jersey: during the peak 2024 period, Condor Ferries carried 19,217 additional car and foot passengers on UK and French services to and from Jersey compared to the same period in 2023, amounting to an increase of +16%.

Brittany Ferries reports a year of growth

FerryIn its 2024 financial year (November 2023 - October 2024), Brittany Ferries increases its passenger volume by 6.5%, with 1.93 million passengers booked compared to the same period in 2023. This growth recorded for the second consecutive year (+11.9% in 2023 compared to 2022) confirms its return to growth.

Slightly more passengers for Destination Gotland during the summer of 2024

FerryTravel with Destination Gotland during the summer months of 2024 increased slightly compared to the previous year. During the period June-August, nearly 940,000 people travelled with the ferries, which corresponds to an increase of approximately 2,000 travellers.

Höegh Autoliners receives second Aurora Class newbuild

Ro-roHöegh Autoliners’ second Aurora Class vessel, the HÖEGH BOREALIS, was delivered at a grand naming ceremony in China. When HÖEGH BOREALIS leaves the China Merchants Heavy Industry’s yard in Jiangsu, China, on her maiden voyage, she will be cutting carbon emissions per car transported by up to 58 percent from the current industry average.

Stena Line announces change to Rosslare-Cherbourg service

FerryFollowing a strategic route review, Stena Line has announced that from 27 October 2024, it will be withdrawing STENA VISION from its Rosslare-Cherbourg route.
A three-day week service for freight and travel customers between Rosslare-Cherbourg will be provided by STENA HORIZON offering a choice of up to six crossings per week.

Fewer departures meant more passengers for Molslinjen

Molslinjen experienced a better August than last year, despite one less ferry and fewer departures.
After a somewhat disappointing July, August chose to stamp in with beautiful late summer weather - and that really sent the Danes out on the water and on the Molslinjen's ferry routes. With the exception of a single route, all routes saw more August visitors in 2024 than the previous year.

The new fine dining tasting menu “Menu Nordic,” available onboard Tallink Silja Line cruise vessels, has been exclusively created for the company’s fleet by the 2024 Culinary Olympics’ gold medallists - the Culinary Team of Finland. The five-course set menu is offered onboard company’s vessels SILJA SERENADE and SILJA SYMPHONY, operating on the Helsinki-Stockholm route; onboard VICTORIA I, operating on the Helsinki-Tallinn route; and onboard the BALTIC QUEEN, operating on the company’s Tallinn-Stockholm route; available from 11 September 2024 to 14 January 2025.

August marked the maiden call of the GRANDE ABIDJAN in the port of Cartagena, signalling the addition of a new country to the company’s already extensive service network.

Solar power to supply energy for Alslinjen’s new electric ferry

FerryMolslinjen is now investing in a new 132,000 MWh solar park on Djursland to power the new NERTHUS electric ferry currently being built at Cemre Shipyard for service by Alslinjen on the Bøjden to Fynshav route. The investment is an important step towards Molslinjen's vision of emission-free operation by 2040.

AIDA Cruises tests further biofuels

CruiseIn the port of Rotterdam on 5 September 2024 AIDA Cruises refuelled its AIDAPRIMA cruise ship for the first time using 100% renewable Bio Marine Fuel as part of a pilot project to evaluate the fuel performance in regular ship operations for potential for future use. The blended biofuel is produced entirely from advanced feedstocks organic waste or residue. The Bio Marine Fuel (BMF100) sustainable biofuel supplied by VARO Energy is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions minimum of 85% compared to conventional fossil fuels.

GNV POLARIS out on sea trials (UPDATED WITH VIDEO)

FerryFirst in the four-ship series, GNV POLARIS, left the Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) shipyard to carry out sea trials. The soon to be delivered ship, will serve the Valencia – Palma route.
GNV POLARIS is 218-metres long and has a capacity for 1,500 passengers in 303 cabins and 3,100 lanemetres of freight.
