Greece plans EUR 30–35 million ferry bunker subsidy at 16 cents per litre
FerryThe Greek government plans to subsidise marine bunker for ferry operators at 16-euro cents per litre, according to Greek media OT.gr. The aid, estimated at EUR 30–35 million, would apply retroactively from September through the end of October.
An official announcement is expected to clarify whether the subsidy will be extended and when operators will be paid.
The measure aims to cushion rising fuel costs and limit fare increases. It would cover around 20–25% of the sector’s additional bunker bill, estimated at more than EUR 150 million for the period. The European support framework allows aid of up to 70% of the increase. Industry representatives say operators may still have to cut sailings and raise fares.
Shipping and Island Policy Minister Vassilis Kikilias confirmed that the government would provide further support, citing the importance of ferries to island passengers and supply chains. He said earlier government measures had prevented fare increases of around 15% those operators had announced.
