These results consolidate the positive development of Fred. Olsen Cargo Express, the ferry operator’s specialist maritime freight division, which has seen significant growth in recent years. Compared with 2023, the tonnage carried has increased by 54%, while freight volumes measured in lane metres have risen by 37%. This growth reflects the importance of maritime connectivity in supplying the archipelago and supporting its economic activity, writes Fred. Olsen Express. 

The freight carried reflects the variety of products involved in supplying the Canary Islands’ everyday needs. Food accounts for nearly 40% of freight volumes, while water and other beverages represent around 30%. Parcels account for approximately 5% and textiles for 3%, alongside refrigerated goods, dangerous goods and other cargo.

The RoRo vessels also play a specific role in carrying dangerous goods, which require special transport conditions. More than 3,000 units of this type of cargo have been transported so far this year.

The establishment of a dedicated freight subsidiary in 2024 strengthened and optimised the operations already provided by the company’s passenger vessels. The RoRo vessels BENTAYGA CARGO and BAHÍA CARGO joined this operation, followed in July 2025 by BREÑAS CARGO, the fleet’s third RoRo, with capacity for up to 1,500 lane metres of freight and 7,000 tonnes.
