Popular tourist island off western France to get new car and passenger ferry
FerryThe Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in southwestern France has ordered a RoPax ferry from Gléhen Shipyard in Brittany for delivery in 2028.
The 40-metre-long, nine-metre-wide conventional ferry will have a steel hull and an aluminium superstructure. One possible loading configuration comprises three cars, two smaller trucks weighing up to 19 tonnes each, and 20 bicycles. Loading and unloading will take place via side ramps on both sides. Passenger capacity will be 400.
The newbuilding will be the largest vessel built to date by the French shipyard, which specialises in small, aluminium-built vessels for specialist applications. The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region will deploy the ferry on its 25-minute route between Fouras and Île d’Aix on France’s west coast. The island is a popular day-trip destination, particularly in summer.
The new ferry will replace the route’s existing car and passenger ferry, the 289 GT PIERRE LOTI, built in 1992.
