DFDS' April 2025 volume numbers are compared to 2024 impacted by the Easter holiday period falling in April this year compared to March in 2024. In general, this decreases freight volumes and increases passenger volumes compared to April 2024. In April 2025, Easter's shift to April from March 2024 reduced ferry freight volumes by 0.7% to 3.5 million lane metres (2.5% adjusted for route changes) but boosted passenger numbers by 15.1% to 432,000 (cars up 13.0%). Freight rose 4.6% over the past year to 41.4 million lane metres (0.7% adjusted), and passengers increased 15.9% to 5.9 million (3.7% adjusted), reflecting route changes including sales and new Jersey routes.
FinanceScandlines announced its financial results for the year ending 31 December 2024. The company maintained revenue at EUR 465 million (EUR 466 million) and improved its profit before tax to EUR 125 million (EUR 122 million). Traffic remained unchanged at 6.4 million passengers and a record-breaking 2.7 million passengers during the summer season alone.

Ro-roCLdN has announced a 25% capacity increase on its Liverpool – Dublin service. The increase will be achieved through the deployment of larger four-deck con-ro vessels with a capacity of 3.700 lane metres. The change to higher capacity vessels will also provide environmental benefits as the use of these larger ships will reduce customers’ CO2 emissions per tonne of transported cargo by up to 50%.

Ro-roCLdN has announced that the DELPHINE successfully completed its first voyage since the fire incident on 16 April, operating an overnight trip from Zeebrugge to Killingholme. The vessel was authorised to sail at a reduced capacity of 6,000 lane metres, down from its full 8,000 lane metres.

Ro-roFred. Olsen Cargo Express began its logistics service venture in 2024, acquiring two ro-ro vessels dedicated to freight transport. After nearly a year of operations, the company has announced the addition of a third vessel this summer, which will connect La Palma with the islands of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote.
Irish Continental Group plc (ICG) released a trading update for 2025, detailing performance up to 3 May and financials for January to April. Group revenue rose 7.1% to EUR 189.5 million, driven by a 17.6% increase in the Container and Terminal Division, with container freight volumes up 28.6% and terminal lifts up 9.8%. However, the Ferries Division saw a 0.8% revenue drop and a 7.1% decline in car carryings, impacted by the Holyhead Port closure, though partial reopening has stabilized volumes. Net debt increased to EUR 247.9 million due to vessel acquisitions and share buybacks. High-speedThe future of the Norwegian shipyard Brødrene Aa hangs in the balance after the cancellation of the three electric high-speed vessels, TYRA, VÅR, and MAGNI, reports Kystens Næringsliv. Originally set for a critical deadline on Friday, the company is working intensely behind the scenes to secure its future. On 2 April, Brødrene Aa announced layoffs for all employees due to ongoing issues with the first of three vessels being built for ferry operator Norled.

FerryGNV has announced an order for the construction of four additional new ro-pax vessels, to be built at Guangzhou Shipyard International in China. Construction is scheduled to commence in 2026, with the first ship expected to be delivered in early 2028, followed by the others at six-month intervals.
FerryPort of Gothenburg has over two weeks carried out a pilot project which successfully showed that hydrogen can be the key to clean shore power in ports without electrical infrastructure. Over the two weeks, a hydrogen powered generator running on 100% green hydrogen was used to supply electricity to Stena Line's two Gothenburg-Kiel ro-pax ferries STENA GERMANICA and STENA SCANDINAVICA while berthed in Gothenburg.
FerryThe ro-pax ferry KMP MUCHLISA, built in 1980 and measuring 725 gross tonnes, suddenly capsized and sank on 5 May at 3:30 PM local time, less than one nautical mile from its destination, Penajam Port in Balikpapan Bay, Indonesia. Local media reported that KMP MUCHLISA had 22 passengers and 18 crew members on board at the time of the incident, during which the ferry sank rapidly and came to rest on the seabed at a depth of 12 metres.

In 2024, Finnlines had to adapt its fleet to meet changed market conditions. By rationalising the fleet composition and by re-organising some of its freight services, Finnlines was able to improve its profitability. This combined with reduced debt and falling interest rates were the main drivers behind the significant result improvements.
FinanceDFDS’s revenue went up 8% to DKK 7.5 billion in the first quarter of 2025. Organic growth was -1%, EBIT reduced by DKK 317 million to DKK -117 million. Adjusted free cash flow increased DKK 573 million to DKK 246 million. CO2 ferry emission intensity from own fleet lowered 5.9%. “2025 is a transitional year, as noted in our latest annual report, where we lay the groundwork for improving financial performance following the events of 2024. Firstly, most of our business units are as expected on track to uphold performance or improve in 2025. Secondly, we are making progress on resolving three specific focus areas,” comments DFDS’ CEO Torben Carlsen.

High-speedBaleària will commence operations on the Tarifa-Tangier Ville route on 8 May with the fast ferry AVEMAR DOS, which has recently conducted berthing tests in both Spanish and Moroccan ports. For several weeks, Baleària has had tickets on sale for this new route, its fourth between Spain and Morocco. Baleària will initially offer four daily services from each port, with frequencies increasing progressively as the summer season approaches, with departures from early morning until night.
