Smyril Line is developing new RoPax tonnage
FerryThe Faroese operator Smyril Line is in the early stages of developing a new RoPax ferry for the North Atlantic. This was announced by Smyril Line in a press release in connection with the publication of the company’s 2025 annual report.
In the report, the company summarizes the ongoing newbuilding project at CIMC Raffles in China, involving two dual fuel, Methanol-Ready RoRo vessels with a capacity of 3,300 lanemetres for the company’s fleet. Construction of the two new RoRo vessels, TBN: SKIPANES and TBN: AKRANES, is progressing according to plan, and they are therefor expected to be commissioned on the route network during the third quarter of this year.
The information about the early design stage of another newbuilding project, involving a RoPax vessel, appears in the press release as part of the summary regarding newbuildings.
Smyril Line also reported solid financial results for 2025, with a profit after tax of DKK 147 million, representing an increase of DKK 20 million compared to the 2024 result. Revenue increased to DKK 1.61 billion, compared to DKK 1.46 billion in 2024.
The company further states that expectations for the current financial year are in line with the 2025 result. Smyril Line currently operates only one RoPax ferry: the purpose-built 36,976 GT NORRÖNA, delivered by Flender Werft in 2003. NORRÖNA underwent an extensive modernization and refurbishment at Fayard Yard in Denmark in 2020.
