Viking Line hit by data breach
FerryViking Line has confirmed a data breach affecting customer information after a security incident at one of its third-party suppliers. The breach, discovered earlier this week, occurred via a subcontractor handling pre-order services for onboard purchases and reservations.
According to reports from Finnish media including Yle, Iltalehti, and Hufvudstadsbladet, leaked data includes details related to advance bookings and possibly passenger personal information.
A threat actor known as "bytetobreach" has claimed responsibility on dark web forums, alleging they accessed a full passenger database—including vehicle registration plates—and payment transaction records linked to onboard services via the NetAxept API.
The group reportedly made samples of the data available for free download. Viking Line stated that a large internal team is intensively investigating the incident in cooperation with external experts.
The company described the leaked information as limited but confirmed that certain traveler data was exposed. Swedish communications chief Eleonora Hult din emphasized that operations remain unaffected.
No evidence suggests the breach has impacted core booking systems or ongoing voyages.
