Grenaa open for new ferry operator to Sweden after Stena exit - but only for one year
FerryOn 30 April, Stena Line will sail its final crossing with STENA NAUTICA on its route between Halmstad in Sweden and Grenaa in Denmark. The company has operated the route since 2020, when the Swedish port of call was moved from Varberg to Halmstad, but unsatisfactory traffic figures have led Stena Line to a withdrawal from Grenaa.
Grenaa Port has now announced that it will keep the ferry terminal on standby for one year from 30 April, while it is determined whether a new operator can be found to run ferry services to Sweden from the port. If this is not successful within a year, the port will begin transforming the terminal area for other port-related activities.
This would mark the end of 66 years of ferry service between Grenaa and western Sweden. It was the Norwegian company I/S Europafergen that initiated traffic between Sweden and Grenaa in 1960 with the ferry EUROPAFERGEN. Grenaa lost its domestic route to Hundested in Zealand in 1996. After Stena Line’s exit, only one passenger route will remain from the port: the municipally owned lifeline route to the remote Kattegat island of Anholt, operated by the ferry ANHOLT.
