Unusual triple ceremony at Remontowa
FerryOn 19 March at the Remontowa Shipbuilding, an unusual triple ceremony took place: the keel laying of ferry hull number B 621/2, along with the steel cutting for ferries B 621/3 and B 621/4. These are additional vessels being built under a contract with Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL).
They will operate nine local routes between the islands of the Scottish Hebrides archipelago. Ferries B 621/2 and B 621/3 will each be able to carry 200 passengers and 24 cars. Ferry B 621/4, which features a different design from the others, will accommodate 250 passengers and 16 cars.
Each electric ferry will be equipped with batteries with a capacity of 5,746 kWh. This capacity has been selected based on the vessels’ energy demand and considers their varied operational profiles, including planned route rotations. It is assumed that each ferry will be assigned to a specific route for a given period, while annual rotation will ensure even fleet utilization and positively affect battery lifespan.
Battery charging will primarily take place during overnight layovers using a conventional shore power system. Additionally, each ferry will be fitted with two diesel generators equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems, serving as a backup power source to ensure operational continuity in case of limitations in the battery system.
The vessels are being built based on a technical design developed by the LMG Marin with support from Remontowa Marine Design & Consulting. Delivery of ferry B 621/2 is scheduled for the third quarter of 2027. The subsequent vessels will be delivered at four-month intervals.
