Candela and Canopy Power partner to deliver floating solar charging for electric ferries in asia-pacific
FerryCandela has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Singapore-based renewable energy firm Canopy Power to deploy floating solar-powered charging stations for electric vessels in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. The collaboration integrates Candela's efficient P-12 hydrofoil ferries with Canopy Power's microgrids featuring Ocean Sun's patented floating solar technology, creating a fully fossil-free "sun-to-sea" ecosystem for remote island communities and coastal tourism.
The partnership targets the high costs and environmental impact of diesel-dependent operations in isolated APAC islands, where resorts, hotels, and restaurants often rely on imported fossil fuels and conventional ferries. Canopy Power will design microgrids that capture solar energy directly on the water's surface using Ocean Sun's innovative hydroelastic membrane-mounted panels, combined with battery storage for fast-charging Candela's P-12 vessels. The P-12, which uses computer-controlled hydrofoils to "fly" above the waves, consumes 80% less energy than traditional hull designs, enabling long-range, high-speed electric travel in remote areas.
This integrated solution promises substantial reductions in operational expenses (OPEX) by eliminating fuel costs, while slashing CO2 emissions and protecting sensitive marine environments. It also delivers quieter, vibration-free, and odor-free transport, enhancing premium guest experiences at island destinations.
Björn Antonsson, Candela's APAC Regional Manager, stated: “Dependence on fossil fuels is the single largest cost driver for operators on remote islands. Through this collaboration with Canopy Power, we offer a complete ecosystem—we're not just selling a boat; we're providing a way to convert sunlight into quiet, luxurious high-speed transportation that pays for itself through fuel savings.
”Mahasti Motazedi, Strategy Director at Canopy Power, added: “The combination of our floating charging solution and Candela's ultra-efficient vessels is a game changer for the region. For the first time, island resorts can adopt a sustainable, clean water mobility system, ending reliance on diesel.”
The companies plan to engage stakeholders, policymakers, and resort operators to demonstrate real-world use cases, showcasing how renewable on-site energy and advanced electric vessels can drive both profitability and environmental protection in APAC's island tourism sector.
