Ro-roSmyril Line has extended its charter from Siem Shipping of the 3,660 lanemetre RoRo LISTA for 11 months starting from September 2025. The 2011-built LISTA was brought in while the 1,600 lanemetre GLYVURSNES - which on 2 January 2025 suffered a serious engine room fire in Hirtshals that claimed the life of a crew member - was out of Smyril Line’s network, the route between Tórshavn, Hirtshals, and Þorlákshöfn, for repairs.
Ro-roAn apparently sudden and severe list caused a fatal accident on 9 October around 14:30 local time at the Turkish Yildiz repair yard in Tuzla. The vessel involved is the 1997-built, 570 lanemetre heavy-lift/multi-purpose RoRo ELMES. The list to port side occurred while the ship was moored alongside at the yard with a large number of shipyard workers on board, and it caused, among other things, one of the ship’s hatches to slide overboard.
FerryKiwiRail has entered into an agreement to sell the aged and out of service Interislander ferry ARATERE to a buyer which will deliver it to a specialist recycling shipyard in India. ARATERE was delivered as a newbuild 26 years ago to KiwiRail from Spanish shipyard Barreras and was retired from service in August to make way for port infrastructure needed for the arrival of two brand new rail-enabled ferries arriving in 2029, for which it is now believed a Letter of Intent (LOI) has been signed with the GSI Shipyard in China.

High-speedMarine battery manufacturer AYK Energy has won a contract to power the world’s first fully electric intercontinental fast ferries between Europe and Africa. Spanish ferry operator Baleària will operate the twin catamarans solely on electric propulsion throughout the 18-nautical mile voyage between Tarifa in the south of Spain and Tangier, Morocco at speeds of up to 26 knots.

Ro-roGrimaldi Lines’ 4,300 CEU/3,100 lane metre GRANDE SICILIA carrying cars, machinery and heavy equipment docked at the Syrian port of Latakia 4 October, reopening Grimaldi Lines’ route between Syria and Italy after more than seven years of suspension due to western sanctions.
DFDS’ total freight volumes in September 2025 counted 3.5 million lanemetres, which were 0.8% above 2024 and 1.2% lower adjusted for route changes. YTD growth rates were 0.2% and -1.2%, respectively. North Sea volumes were on level with 2024 following stable volumes on most routes. Mediterranean volumes were below 2024 following a continued slowdown in Turkish automotive manufacturing and domestic demand as well as reduced capacity on one route in response to the competitive situation.
FerryThe Finnish domestic ferry operator Finferries (Finlands Färjetrafik Ab) has signed an agreement with the ELY Centre for Southwest Finland concerning the procurement project “Road Ferry Service for Lake Finland 2026–2047”. The company has developed an environmentally friendly transport concept for 12 cable ferry routes in Inland Finland, which will increase the transport capacity on these routes to 90 tonnes.
Corvus Energy, a supplier of energy storage systems (ESS) for the maritime industry, announced it has secured USD 60 million in growth capital from a group of international investors. The consortium is led by Morgan Stanley Investment Management and includes Just Climate and J. Lauritzen.

FerryThe new EUR 114.6 million RoPax ferry being built by Fincantieri for the Sicilian Region has been launched at the Palermo shipyard. The Naos-designed CONSTANZA I DI SICILIA is scheduled for delivery in the summer of 2026 and will provide service between Lampedusa and Pantelleria.

FerryOn 9 October 2025, Osaka-based Shin Nihonkai Ferry’s newest ship was launched at the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) Shimonoseki Shipyard and was named HAMANASU. Hamanasu means “Rosa rugosa,” a flower found in Hokkaido.
Ro-roCalMac has sub-chartered the 1,050 lanemetre ARROW from DFDS. The 1998-built Isle of Man Steam Packet Company-owned RoRo vessel will be used to secure the necessary freight capacity on CalMac’s Stornoway–Ullapool route while the route’s regular ferry, the RoPax LOCH SEAFORTH, undergoes a scheduled docking from 19 October to 15 November.
