2026 looks like a stable year for Jadrolinija - but fleet age is pressing on
FerryThe Croatian ferry operator Jadrolinija ended the first eight months of 2026 with traffic volumes remaining broadly stable, despite a continued challenging market and geopolitical environment. The operator carried 9.3 million passengers and 2.8 million vehicles, with passenger numbers slightly down compared with the same period in 2025 and vehicle numbers virtually unchanged. The summer season confirmed particularly strong demand on the main routes serving the Croatian islands. This is reported by the Croatian news agency Hina.
Financially, Jadrolinija ended 2025 with a loss, while maintaining stable operating performance during the first six months of 2026. Revenue increased by 3%, but costs rose by 5% over the same period, mainly due to higher maintenance and energy expenses, as well as the international geopolitical situation. The company is therefore seeking to manage its resources more efficiently and tighten control over its cost structure to limit the impact of these factors.
However, Jadrolinija’s real challenge is fleet renewal. Together with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, the company has begun a process aimed at arranging the financing required for its modernisation programme. According to Jadrolinija, the plan could eventually include up to ten new ships of varying sizes and specifications, tailored to the requirements of individual routes.
The objective is to gradually replace the oldest vessels with more energy-efficient ships. Jadrolinija is not focusing on a single technology but is considering electric propulsion, hybrid systems and alternative fuels, depending on the operational characteristics of the various routes.
Jadrolinija currently operates a fleet of 58 vessels, comprising 39 ferries, 14 catamarans, four conventional passenger ships and one ferry deployed on international services. The fleet has an average age of 27.9 years.
