Molslinjen to build large battery facility on Samsø
FerryMolslinjen has initiated plans for a BESS facility – a large battery on the Danish island of Samsø in the Kattegat. The battery will ensure a stable electricity supply for the Ballen–Kalundborg route, which is served by the electric ferry TYRFING.
The new BESS facility will be located at Ballen ferry port and will ensure a stable electricity supply for the electric ferry TYRFING, which operates between Ballen and Kalundborg.
Molslinjen will build a 12-MWh battery on Samsø in the Kattegat. Its Ballen–Kalundborg route is served by the electric ferry TYRFING, and the battery will help ensure that sufficient energy is always available for the ferry to operate up to five daily return crossings with its passengers.
“With a battery of this size, we can store enough electricity for four crossings by the ferry. This will provide us with a more secure and stable supply of the energy required for our ferry route,” explains Molslinjen CEO Carsten Jensen.
The battery will be a BESS facility – a Battery Energy Storage System – with a fully charged capacity of up to 12 MWh. This is equivalent to the amount of electricity consumed by approximately 1,000 detached houses in one day.
Work on the battery packages and identifying the most suitable supplier for the battery facilities has been carried out in collaboration with specialists from Hybrid Greentech, which has advised Molslinjen since the beginning of the project. As with Molslinjen’s other battery installations at the ports of Aarhus and Odden, the large battery will be supplied by BOS Power.
At a time when the wider electricity grid is struggling to meet demand, the battery on Samsø could help support and stabilise the grid. It can store surplus electricity during periods of the day when consumption is low. The same electricity – and therefore additional capacity – can subsequently be released into the grid when consumption is higher and capacity is insufficient.
Samsø’s electricity system currently operates as a closed circuit, with power reaching the island through two subsea cables. Samsø Municipality has a vision that, in the longer term, the new battery should be capable of supplying Samsø with electricity in the event of a prolonged blackout affecting the connection to the mainland.
“For many years, Samsø has been known for leading the way in the green transition. The construction of a very large battery storage facility – a BESS facility to be built by Samsølinjen at Ballen ferry port – represents another important step in that direction. The BESS facility can help stabilise the electricity grid and support more flexible use of renewable energy, while also serving as an emergency power supply during a crisis. This is positive for Samsø, Samsølinjen and the energy system of which we are part,” says Samsø Mayor Per Urban Olsen.
The new battery will be located at Ballen ferry port on Samsø. Construction is scheduled to take place during autumn and winter 2026/2027, and the battery is expected to begin storing electricity in March 2027.
BOS Power and Hybrid Greentech are also behind Molslinjen’s forthcoming record-breaking BESS facilities in Aarhus and Sjællands Odde. These are being established in connection with Molslinjen’s introduction of three fully electric high-speed ferries from Incat over the next three years.
