Thousands of ‘fines’ have prompted car owners to switch off their alarms on ferries
FerryWhen one of Molslinjen’s ferries arrives at or departs from port, movement and engine vibrations often trigger a chorus of car alarms on the vehicle decks. Many cars – particularly the growing number of new, sensitive electric vehicles – interpret these movements as an attempted theft.
The resulting concert is a musical experience neither passengers nor ferry crews have asked for. For years, ferry travel advice has therefore encouraged drivers to switch off their alarms during the crossing, when theft is hardly a realistic possibility anyway.
There have been plenty of complaints about the noise, but tackling these unintended alarms has proved difficult. Now, however, a friendly reminder disguised as a yellow parking ticket on the windscreen has made a big difference.
“Our colleagues on the vehicle decks have simply been placing a yellow notice on the windscreens of cars whose alarms go off during the crossing. The notice looks just like a parking ticket but is actually only a friendly request to switch off the alarm next time,” explains Molslinjen’s Chief Commercial Officer, Lucas Kragh.
Since March this year, more than 20,000 ‘fines’ have been handed out on Molslinjen’s Kattegat ferries, Bornholmslinjen and Fanølinjen. Further ‘fines’ have been ordered for windscreens on Alslinjen, Samsølinjen and Langelandslinjen.
"The feedback from the ships is that this has had a major impact on the number of alarms. We still hear alarms, but there are always new car owners who need to work out how to deactivate theirs,” says Lucas Kragh.
