Oldest ferry in GNV’s fleet sold for recycling
FerryGNV has sold its 1981-built ferry GNV AZZURRA for recycling in Turkey. GNV AZZURRA has been laid up in Genoa since June after suffering an engine room fire while sailing from Porto Torres to Genoa.
The crew brought the fire under control, but two of GNV AZZURRA’s four main engines were severely damaged.
GNV has confirmed to Italian maritime news outlet Shipping Italy that the ferry is leaving Genoa for recycling. According to the outlet’s other sources, its final destination will be Turkey.
GNV AZZURRA was originally built as WASA STAR for Finland’s Wasa Line at the Swedish shipyard Öresundsvarvet. However, its spent most of its Northern European career sailing as PETER WESSEL for Norway’s Larvik Line. The ferry, lengthened at Germany’s Blohm + Voss in 1989, was sold to SNAV in 2008 and renamed SNAV TOSCANA.
SNAV was integrated into GNV in 2017, when the ferry received its current name. GNV AZZURRA is GNV’s oldest vessel. Following its sale for recycling, that distinction passes to the 1986-built GNV BLU, originally KONINGIN BEATRIX.
