CORSICA linea trials BioLNG on A GALEOTTA for Marseille–Bastia service
FerryCORSICA linea has become the first operator serving Corsica to launch a pilot integrating biomethane into the LNG supply of one of its vessels, with A GALEOTTA running on BioLNG on the Bastia–Marseille route during the 2026 summer season.
The French operator says the switch will cut A GALEOTTA's carbon footprint on the Corsican trade by 80 per cent. The scheme relies on a certified volume-equivalence system, under which a quantity of renewable biomethane derived from organic waste is produced and injected into the European gas network in proportion to the vessel's LNG consumption. The pilot runs on Corsica's most important freight line, testing certified biomethane in live operating conditions aboard a public-service vessel.
The initiative sits within CORSICA linea's environmental commitments under its territorial-continuity public-service delegation contract and aligns with the EU Emissions Trading System and FuelEU Maritime regulation. The company is also calling for the development of a local biomethane production sector, pointing to the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region and the Fos-sur-Mer industrial-port zone as strategically placed.
"With this BioLNG test, CORSICA linea is taking a new step towards creating a low-carbon-intensity maritime corridor between Corsica and the mainland," said Director General Pierre-Antoine Villanova, adding that structuring a local supply chain is the next ambition.
Since 2018, CORSICA linea has invested more than EUR 350 million across over 40 projects targeting a 40 per cent CO2 reduction by 2030. The arrival of second LNG vessel CAPU ROSSU on 15 June 2026 makes it the first French operator to run two LNG ships on regular Corsican services.
