Molslinjen cuts HAMMERSHUS overhaul time with Wärtsilä exchange parts
FerryDanish operator Molslinjen has completed a major 32,000-hour engine overhaul on the RoPax ferry HAMMERSHUS within a 14-day dry-docking window, using Wärtsilä's Exchange Parts service to install pre-overhauled cylinder packages rather than reconditioning the removed components on site.
The HAMMERSHUS, a 158-metre RoPax vessel with capacity for up to 720 passengers, operates the Rönne–Køge and Rønne–Sassnitz routes under the Bornholmslinjen brand, connecting the island of Bornholm with the Danish and German mainland. Molslinjen is Denmark's largest domestic ferry operator, running a fleet of 20 ships and carrying more than 15 million passengers a year.
The overhaul covered both Wärtsilä 31 main engines. Because the tight 14-day schedule left no time to recondition parts during the docking, Molslinjen opted for exchange power units, complete pre-overhauled cylinder packages made up of three sub-assemblies: the cylinder head, the cylinder liner and piston with connecting rod, and the guide block. All 16 cylinders, eight per engine, were overhauled at a fixed price, with the components removed from the engines returned to Wärtsilä for reconditioning and reuse.
Wärtsilä says the ready-to-install parts can reduce the time required for an overhaul by up to 37 per cent, as operators avoid waiting for old components to be reconditioned or for workshop labour and parts to become available. The fixed-price scope also improved budgeting predictability by removing the need to purchase spare parts individually.
"Significant time savings can be achieved when parts are ready for use directly out of the box," said Jan Hauberg Jørgensen, Chief Engineer at Molslinjen. "Additionally, the process of removing and installing the piston, liner and connecting rod in a single lift further optimises efficiency."
