TT-Line orders second Green Ship 2.0
FerryTT-Line has confirmed an order for a second Green Ship 2.0 newbuild, a sister vessel to the ship announced at the end of 2025. The two LNG-hybrid ferries form part of the operator's fleet renewal programme. The second newbuild will be built by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Nanjing, the same yard contracted for the first vessel. The first ship is scheduled to enter service on the Baltic Sea before summer 2030.
TT-Line says the pair follow on from the Green Ships NILS HOLGERSSON and PETER PAN, and have been designed to increase transport capacity while improving operational efficiency, environmental performance and passenger comfort.
Each vessel will accommodate up to 1,000 persons on board, with freight capacity of 5,400 lane metres.
Both ships will have an LNG-hybrid propulsion system supported by an LFP battery energy storage system rated at between 5.5 MWh and 10 MWh. According to TT-Line, the battery system is designed to allow fully electric propulsion and can be scaled up with additional batteries, with further battery rooms and an electrical architecture prepared for increased electrification during the vessels' operational lifetime.
The battery installation is intended to permit emission-free operation during port stays and manoeuvring. Combined with Power-Take-In and Power-Take-Out technology, the hybrid arrangement is expected to reduce peak load requirements and lower energy consumption. Both vessels will also have upgraded shore power connections for high-capacity battery charging in port.
Each Green Ship 2.0 will have 300 passenger cabins, including cabin types aimed at families, couples and truck drivers. Other passenger facilities include restaurants and lounges, upgraded crew facilities and a sun deck with a wellness area comprising sauna and jacuzzi, a children's playground and a dog area.
Bernhard Termühlen, CEO of TT-Line, said: "The order of a second Green Ship 2.0 demonstrates TT-Line's long-term commitment to provide efficient and state of the art transport solutions in the Baltic Sea between Sweden, Germany, Poland and Lithuania."
Andreas Schärli, COO of TT-Line, added: "By adding a second Green Ship 2.0, we are accelerating the transformation of our fleet. The combination of LNG propulsion, large-scale battery technology and advanced shore power capabilities provides the flexibility needed to meet both today's and tomorrow's environmental challenges. With expandable battery capacity, both vessels are designed for fully electric operation in the future."
