STAR PRINCESS Completes Sea Trials
CruiseThe second Sphere-Class ship, STAR PRINCESS, built by Fincantieri for Princess Cruises, has successfully completed its sea trials, marking a key milestone. The vessel is set to welcome its first guests on 4 October 2025 for a Mediterranean voyage from Barcelona.
From 9–12 August, STAR PRINCESS left Fincantieri’s Monfalcone shipyard for the Adriatic Sea, undergoing tests of its steering, navigation, and propulsion systems. As the second Princess Cruises ship powered by liquefied natural gas, it advances efforts to reduce emissions. The ship features two Azipod propulsion units for 360-degree thrust and four large controllable pitch bow thrusters for precise lateral movement.
Captain Gennaro Arma, a 27-year veteran with Princess Cruises and head of the Sphere-Class newbuild team, led the trials. He now oversees 1,600 crew members as the 177,800gt, 4,300-guest STAR PRINCESS undergoes final outfitting. Captain Arma commented, “We navigated STAR PRINCESS through sea trials with confidence. I’m impressed by the ship’s handling and capabilities. My team and I are eager to welcome guests for memorable journeys this autumn.”
Currently in its final construction phase at Fincantieri, STAR PRINCESS, sister to SUN PRINCESS, will offer 30 dining and bar venues, enhanced entertainment, and accommodations including Sanctuary Collection suites, mini-suites, and balcony rooms. With over 1,500 balcony staterooms, guests can enjoy private sea views. Notable features include The Dome for relaxation and entertainment, The Arena theatre, The Piazza with its curved architecture and ocean views, and Spellbound by Magic Castle®, a speakeasy experience in collaboration with Hollywood’s Magic Castle™.
STAR PRINCESS will launch with sailings to the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Panama Canal, and Alaska.
