Ports of Tallinn and Stockholm move toward fossil-free maritime transport
PortThe Port of Tallinn and Ports of Stockholm signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 4 November in Tallinn, launching the Swed-Est Green Collaboration — a joint initiative to promote sustainable, fossil-free maritime transport between Estonia and Sweden, focusing on the Tallinn–Stockholm and Paldiski–Kapellskär routes.
According to Valdo Kalm, CEO of the Port of Tallinn, the partnership aims to reduce maritime environmental impact while offering modern, eco-friendly solutions for passengers and cargo operators.
“This collaboration strengthens both ports’ competitiveness and opens new opportunities for innovation, research, and EU-funded green projects,” Kalm said.
Beyond environmental goals, the partnership seeks to boost passenger traffic, cargo volumes, and regional growth, while inviting wider participation from public and private stakeholders.
Magdalena Bosson, CEO of Ports of Stockholm, emphasized the shared mission:
“Sweden and Estonia share the same sea — and the same responsibility to protect it. Together we can accelerate the green transition across the Baltic Sea.”
The agreement covers actions in four ports to cut emissions, improve energy efficiency, and advance circular-economy practices. Key targets include:
- Onshore Power Supply (OPS) for RoPax vessels in Paldiski South Harbour and Kapellskär by 2030.
- Investment in renewable energy: solar panels, LED lighting, and CO2-free heating and power systems.
- Enhanced waste recycling, biogas production from food waste, and reuse of treated greywater.
- Transition to zero-emission port machinery and electric transport.
- Sustainable terminal upgrades in both cities.
Building on the success of the FIN-EST Green Corridor with Helsinki, this new partnership represents a major step toward a cleaner Baltic Sea and a fossil-free maritime future for Estonia and Sweden.
