Port of Trelleborg invests in new RoRo berth
PortSweden's Port of Trelleborg has taken the next step in its relocation to the new port, awarding Skanska a contract to rebuild part of the existing commercial quay into a new RoRo ferry berth.
The works cover 250 metres of the 500-metre-long quay and will create ferry berth 14. The new berth is being configured for modern RoRo operation and will be fitted with five side fenders plus a bulb fender to ensure efficient and safe calls.
The project is the final stage of the port's 2010 environmental ruling, under which all regular vessel traffic is to be moved progressively from the old part of the port to the new one. Since that decision was taken, vessel numbers have risen by more than could be foreseen at the time, placing fresh demands on capacity and infrastructure.
The investment is expected to bring several clear benefits. Concentrating ferry traffic in the new part of the port will reduce noise in central Trelleborg while improving the port's internal logistics, resulting in more efficient flows and better conditions for continued growth.
Ferry berth 14 is scheduled for completion during the first quarter of 2027, when it will become the main berth for the Polish-route ferries. With this addition, Port of Trelleborg will have a total of eight RoRo berths in operation.
