Port of Turku modernisation drives green shipping corridor with Viking Line
PortPort of Turku is undertaking a EUR 200 million-plus modernisation programme, including construction of the joint Fregatten terminal, which will open in 2028 to serve up to 8,000 daily passengers from VIKING GLORY and VIKING GRACE.
The new facility will streamline operations for both Viking Line and Tallink Silja. VIKING GLORY and VIKING GRACE's new berth S2 will feature automated vacuum-based mooring systems to accelerate vessel arrivals and departures. Up to 48 vehicle lanes will direct traffic to quay areas, with automatic vehicle identification and digital routing.
The terminal will integrate public transport, with bus, rail, and forthcoming tram connections placed directly adjacent.
Viking Line has invested EUR 450 million in climate-smart tonnage on the Turku–Stockholm route, currently bunkering a 50/50 blend of bio-LNG and LNG. The company is conducting a feasibility study for battery installation on the pair and plans to transition to fossil-free operations by 2035 in collaboration with Port of Turku and Stockholm ports.
The Fregatten terminal will utilise renewable district heating and cooling, with climate-neutral electricity, targeting high environmental certification standards.
