HANSEATIC completes North East Passage
CruiseHapag-Lloyd Cruises’ expedition cruise ship HANSEATIC successfully completed its second transit of the North East Passage when arriving off Cape Dezhnev on September 7.
The cruise had started on August 16 in Tromsø and took the vessel via Murmansk, Novaya Zemlya and Franz Josef land through the Kara Sea and to Wrangel Island. After a total 5,542 nautical miles, HANSEATIC is expected to arrive in the port of Nome (Alaska) on September 10.
In 2014, HANSEATIC had been the first non-Russian cruise ship to be allowed to sail the North East passage. Among the highlights of the recent cruise were a record number of 86 polar bear sightings and numerous northern lights.
Hapag-Lloyd Cruises recently ordered a pair of expedition ship newbuilds from Vard Holdings for delivery in 2019. The company's current expedition fleet in addition to the 1991-built HANSEATIC consists of the 1990-built BREMEN, currently cruising in Greenland.
