Hibernia Lines charter creates queues of trucks in Estonia
FerryDue the three-year charter of the 1.923 lane metres and 717 passengers RoPax SUPERFAST IX to Hibernia Lines, Tallink ended freight operations on the Paldiski–Kapellskär route in May, leaving DFDS as the sole operator. The move has created capacity challenges for freight carriers, as trade with Scandinavia is important for Estonian exports and demand for truck transport to Sweden frequently exceeds available ferry space.
Industry representatives warn in an article in the Estonian public service media ERR, that delays are particularly problematic for time-sensitive and high-value cargo, as shipments often must arrive according to strict schedules. When ferry capacity is reached, trucks are placed on waiting lists, creating uncertainty for exporters serving Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish markets.
DFDS acknowledged increased pressure on certain departures since Tallink withdrew its vessel but has not added capacity. The route continues to be served by SIRENA SEAWAYS, which accommodates around 2,200 lane metres and up to 600 passengers. According to DFDS, the issue is driven less by total weekly capacity than by demand patterns. Export traffic from Estonia is heaviest early in the week, while traffic from Sweden peaks later in the week, making space difficult to secure on the busiest departures even though some sailings still have spare capacity.
Similar shortages have occurred before when only one vessel served the route, suggesting that a single ship may be insufficient during periods of strong demand. To avoid delays, some carriers are rerouting freight via Finland or through Latvia and Lithuania, although these alternatives involve significantly higher costs. Tallink stated after the route closure that the company is fully aware of the current challenges affecting freight transport.
And furthermore, ensured that Tallink have not permanently withdrawn from the route and actively looking for a replacement vessel of suitable capacity. In the statement, Tallink also pointed out that the previous setup of the route was not commercially sustainable in the long term, and decisions had to be made to ensure the overall viability of Tallink’s operations.
