GNV takes delivery of GNV AURORA, the company’s second LNG ship
FerryGNV announced that GNV AURORA, the second LNG-powered unit in the company's fleet, has been delivered from Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in China. The ship will soon leave for the Mediterranean and, once the final fittings have been completed, will enter service at the beginning of April, operating on the Genoa-Palermo route on a daily basis.
With a gross tonnage of approximately 53,000, a length of 218 metres, a width of 29.60 metres, and a maximum cruising speed of 25 knots, GNV AURORA will be able to accommodate over 1,700 passengers in 426 cabins and carry up to 2,780 lane metres of cargo.
With GNV AURORA, the company is sporting a brand-new livery for the first time, with a green leaf symbolizing the sustainability path undertaken in recent years, also thanks to the entry into the fleet of new ships all powered by LNG, while the stylized electrical connection recalls cold ironing.
Like its sister GNV VIRGO, GNV AURORA allows a reduction in CO2 emissions of up to 50% per transportable load compared to previous-generation units.
Additional energy-saving features are also on board, including: heat recovery systems for the production of electricity; inverters for modulating the electrical load and reducing energy waste of pumps and fans; low-consumption all-LED lighting system; optimization of the shapes of the hull, bulb, propellers, and rudders; and silicone paint on the hull to improve hydrodynamics and reduce friction with the water, with a consequent decrease in fuel consumption for propulsion.
This concludes phase one of the company's fleet renewal plan, which saw the entry of four new-generation units, two of which are powered by LNG. A second order has already been confirmed for a further four units, all powered by LNG, whose delivery will take place from the end of 2027 on a six-monthly basis. These are of a larger 237-metre design. The new 71,300 gross tonnage vessels will have a length of 237 metres, and a width of 33 metres. They will accommodate up to 2,500 people (including passengers and crew) and feature over 500 cabins and 3,500 lane metres of garage space.
