Anek Lines 2016 half year results

FinanceGreek ferry operator Anek Lines boosted revenue through more efficient deployment of vessels and trimming costs in the first half of 2016, is confident it s on the right financial course for the year.

Though the Crete-based Anek saw a loss in the January / June period of MEUR 9.1 (MEUR 10.18) it is better than the performance in 2015 when the loss was MEUR 13.1. Anek's revenue at MEUR 65 for the 2016 half was an improvement of MEUR 2.1 on 12 months ago although the company conducted 8% fewer scheduled runs. Reporting its results, the John Vardinoyiannis-managed Anek stressed that despite first half 2015 results the company returned to profit for the year and indicates it expects to be in profit again in 2016. Anek's management in the report on the January / June period said: "It is noted the activity in the sector is characterised by intense seasonality and for this reason the income and operating results of the first semester are achieved in the low season and are not indicative of those for the full year.
"The group's management considers that within the current year the long term debt restructuring process will be completed, having an immediate positive impact on results as well as on net equity due to the drop in financial cost.
"At the operational level, the fluctuation of fuel prices at significantly lower levels than the previous years is a positive factor for the company, which continues on the path of recovery that began in the previous fiscal year."

The Athens Stock Exchange-listed Anek said that in 2016 the management's strategic objectives focus on "the improvement of profitability and the enhancement of the company's capital structure".
In the first half, Ebitda stood at MEUR 4.9, against EUR 400,000 a year earlier. Gross profits were MEUR 11.2 up from MEUR 6.5 at end-June 2015.

Some 53% of revenue came from international activities. Domestic sales accounted for 41.1%, while 5.5% came in "from other activities". Anek which next year celebrates 50 years, has 10 owned and chartered vessels operating in Greece and the Adriatic, and chartered out to operators in central Mediterranean. Meanwhile, Africa Morocco Link has announced the charter of the EL VENIZELOS, Anek finished on September 30, and that the Med's largest ferry will be returning to Greece.
