Wärtsilä to Power Denmark’s First High-Speed Electric Ferries
High-speedWärtsilä will supply a fully integrated electric propulsion package, including waterjets, for two new high-speed battery-electric catamaran ferries ordered by Danish operator Molslinjen. Built by Incat Tasmania, the vessels will feature Wärtsilä’s DC power conversion, energy management and automation systems, eight electric propulsion motors, and the ProTouch control system.
Set to enter service on the Kattegat route in 2027–28, the ferries will each carry up to 1,483 passengers and 500 cars, boosting route capacity by over 25%. The project marks a major step in Denmark’s green transition, expected to cut thousands of tonnes of CO2 annually.
“With these electric ferries built by Incat and powered by Wärtsilä's technology, we are helping drive the ferry industry towards net-zero,” said Molslinjen CEO Kristian Durhuus. Wärtsilä noted it has already delivered solutions for more than 150 hybrid-electric ships worldwide.
The lightweight, shallow-draft waterjets promise high efficiency, low maintenance, and excellent manoeuvrability. Wärtsilä will begin equipment deliveries in 2026.
