Torghatten Nord takes delivery of HINNØY, Norway’s largest fully electric ferry
FerryTurkey’s Cemre Shipyard has delivered NB 1091, a battery-operated ferry for Norway’s Torghatten Nord AS. Designed by The Norwegian Ship Design Company, the 117m double-ender ferry HINNØY will carry 399 passengers and 120 vehicles on the route between Bognes and Lødingen in northern Norway. The 9.2 MWh battery system will provide a crossing time of one hour at a speed of 13–14 knots.
It is planned that all operations of the new ferry will be powered by electricity supplied from Norway’s National Grid onshore, through high-capacity automatic charging connections at both terminals. If shore power is unavailable, bio-diesel generators will provide power for the operation of HINNØY.
HINNØY feature two completely independent propulsion and power systems, arranged so that after any single fault, such as fire or flooding, at least one of these systems remains operational.
HINNØY has been significantly delayed and was initially planned to be delivered in early 2024.
Cemre is also building the FUTURA for Scandlines, now expected to be delivered in June 2025. No delivery dates have been announced for Molslinjen’s NERTHUS and TYRFING, but Molslinjen has stated that NERTHUS will start operations for Alslinjen on 1 October 2025.
