Philippine ferry MERCRAFT 2 suffers major fire, at least seven persons dead
FerryThe Philippine-owned catamaran ferry MERCRAFT 2 suffered a serious onboard fire in the early morning of 22 May while nearing the port of Real, in Quezon Province, near Manila, on its regular run from Polillo Island. The Philippine Coast Guard has confirmed that seven people have died, three are in a critical condition and seven more are missing.
The passenger-only MERCRAFT 2 was carrying 124 passengers and 10 crew, with 120 persons being rescued.
MERCRTAFT 2 is one of two ferries owned by Real-based Mercraft Shipping, the other vessel being MERCRAFT BAY CRUISER.
In December 2017, MERCRAFT 3, carrying 257 passengers and crew on board capsized after hitting a metal fishing buoy in the Polillo Strait, killing five people.
