Stora Enso signs up for Finnlines’ Green Lane low-carbon service
Ro-roFinnlines and Stora Enso have widened their partnership to cut transport emissions from the forest group’s packaging board and wood-based product flows across Europe, with Stora Enso now shipping cargo under Finnlines’ Green Lane service.
Green Lane is the Grimaldi-owned operator’s low-carbon product for shippers, offering renewable biofuel and electricity-based alternatives to conventional fossil-fuelled transport. According to Finnlines, the biofuel option can lower well-to-wake greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 90% compared with fossil fuels. The service works on a mass-balance basis: for the cargo covered, Finnlines replaces an equivalent amount of fossil energy with alternative fuels somewhere in its fleet network.
The reductions are verified independently each year against frameworks including EU MRV, FuelEU Maritime, ISO 14064 and EN 16258, the biofuel is ISCC-certified, and participating customers receive a certificate confirming their savings.
Finnlines describes the Stora Enso deal as the first practical rollout of Green Lane in the packaging board and wood products segment. The company also targets steel, automotive, machinery, chemicals and construction materials customers, though the service is limited to selected routes and flows depending on renewable energy availability.
Through its North Sea & Biscay Line, Finnlines links Finland with Poland, Belgium, Spain and the UK, among other markets. The Spanish services are operated by the Finneco-class hybrid RoRo vessels, which feature air lubrication, high-capacity batteries and solar panels.
Blasco Majorana, Line Manager at Finnlines, says the cooperation shows how operators and industrial shippers can jointly achieve real emission cuts, turning climate targets into “concrete actions and measurable results”. Karl Fjærvoll, Sourcing Manager, Liner Services at Stora Enso, notes that customers increasingly expect low-emission transport across the value chain, and that integrating Green Lane on key routes is part of the group’s wider climate agenda.
