Oma Baatbyggeri to build two new aluminium electric ferries for Torghatten
FerryTorghatten and Oma Baatbyggeri signed a contract for the construction of two new electrically operated ferries for Finnmark, built in aluminium. The ferries will be 49 metres long, have a beam of 13 metres and will carry 95 passengers and 28 cars. Delivery will be in Q4 2025.
Torghatten and Finnmark County Municipality have signed a 10-year contract covering the operation of two ferry crossings in Finnmark. These new electrical ferries will operate between Korsfjord and Nyvoll and between Klokkarøy and Kjerringholmen.
The ferries are equipped with battery packs, which can be recharged from the national power grid, in addition, diesel generators provide emergency backup (plug-in hybrid/electrical).
The new ferry has a universal design with good seaworthiness and has been specially designed and equipped to assist people with disabilities. This includes colour schemes to support the visually impaired, an induction loop system to assist those hard of hearing, and wide corridors and minimal height thresholds to ease the movement for individuals with a physical disability.
The vessel is built in its entirety at the shipyard in Stord and many local suppliers will be involved. BOS Power from Bergen is responsible for the integration of the electric / hybrid propulsion system and the monitoring system on board. Teca AS another firm local to Stord is responsible for the electrical installation on board, while Hardanger based Fjellstrand AS will contribute with the construction of aluminium structures for the project.
