New Rønne Port Design Challenges Ferries

FerryThe new design of the Port of Rønne challenges the conventional ferries. This is shown by the simulations that Bornholmslinjen has carried out together with the Port of Rønne and Niras. The simulations show that HAMMERSHUS can no longer safely sail in and out of the port in winds of up to 23 metres per second in certain wind directions – instead, the limit should be 18 metres per second, the report recommends.

In February 2025, Bornholmslinjen and the Port of Rønne issued a joint press release. After a lengthy debate on the new design of the Port of Rønne, the parties wanted to jointly carry out simulations of the entry and exit conditions in the port with the shipping company's ships in weather conditions that had not previously been simulated. The simulations have now been completed, and a report has been prepared by independent experts (FORCE Technology).

"And unfortunately, the report shows that the new port design in certain wind directions will challenge the conventional ferries so much that it will no longer be safe to use HAMMERSHUS and POVL ANKER in wind speeds stronger than 18 metres per second," says Molslinjen's CEO, Kristian Durhuus.

In the worst case, this could mean days over a year when Bornholm will be completely without ferry service.

"We want nothing more than to fulfill our obligations as the island's lifeline and sail every single day, and we will look for solutions. But we have not and have not had any influence on the design of the port and on the consequences it may have for the ferry service," states Kristian Durhuus.

It is at wind speeds above 18 meters per second in the average wind with winds from the west and northwest that the safety limit for the conventional ferries moves. The report from FORCE Technology also shows that the fast ferries can still operate with the limit of 16 metres per second – although with a smaller safety margin than before.

"It will place higher demands on our captains' skills, as there is not as much room for adjustments or errors in connection with the navigation of the new port layout," says Kristian Durhuus.

The report and its conclusions have been shared with the Port of Rønne and with the Ministry of Transport.
