Molslinjen takes delivery of second electric ferry from Cemre Shipyard

FerrySamsølinjen’s new electric ferry, TYRFING, has now been delivered and is beginning its long journey home from the Cemre Shipyard in Turkey. TYRFING follows NERTHUS, which was delivered in May this year for service with Alslinjen.

"Both of our newbuildings have been affected by delays, so we are pleased that in a few weeks we will be able to welcome TYRFING," says Molslinjen's CEO, Kristian Durhuus.

The electric ferry has backup engines on diesel, and it is they who send the ferry off on the approximately 18-day journey, as it is not possible to receive power for the ferry's batteries before it lands in the specially built berths in Ballen and Kalundborg. The ferry will pick up new fuel once on the trip, and it will be in either Portuguese Setúbal or Spanish Vigo.

"It's always a bit exciting to have to plan these kinds of sailings in the autumn. We have to cross several waters where the weather plays a major role in the crew's ability to keep to the schedule, so we hope for good conditions and a calm trip for our crew," says Kristian Durhuus.

It will be Molslinjen's Mikael Kjerulf, who is the captain on the trip home, and Thomas Mogensen, who is the chief engineer. They will sail the last of two electric ferries, which will set completely new standards for electric ferries in Denmark.

TYRFING, which is 117 metres long, will be powered by batteries of 3.8 MWh. The ferry can transport 188 cars and 600 passengers on one crossing and will be able to sail emission-free on its route.

"We have chosen electrification as our way through the green transition, and therefore it is very exciting for us to get the last ferry home, which is built for a much greener future for Danish ferry traffic," says Kristian Durhuus.

TYRFING will initially sail directly to Svendborg, where it will be docked at the shipyard and made completely ready for operation. After this, the ferry must be prepared and approved by the Danish authorities, crews must be trained and the bearings and power connections tested before the first trip on 1 December 2025.

Molslinjen also has two 130-metre fully electric catamarans on order from Incat, each equipped with a 44.75 MWh battery pack. These vessels will have capacity for almost 1,500 passengers and 500 cars.
