Eckerö buys SAILOR from Tallink and considers a passenger product on Eckerö Link
FerryTallink Group has sold the freight-oriented RoPax vessel SAILOR to Rederiaktiebolaget Eckerö (Eckerö Group). The ship, built in 1987 with a capacity of 1,650 lanemetres and 119 passengers, has been laid up in Tallinn since the beginning of 2025 after being withdrawn from Tallink’s Paldiski–Kapellskär route.
Back in August, Tallink also sold the REGAL STAR (built in 2000, 1,740 lanemetres/80 passengers) to the Italian company Ams Line Shipping. The Paldiski–Kapellskär route is currently served by the RoPax SUPERFAST IX. The tonnage transaction with Tallink is the third in a short period for Eckerö Group.
First, the RoRo vessel FJÄRDVÄGEN was acquired in connection with Eckerö Groups takeover of Rederi AB Fjärdvägen (now Eckerö Link AB) in August, while two months later the company sold the RoRo TRANSPORTER to Godby Shipping. According to Eckerö Group, SAILOR will be deployed by the group’s subsidiary Eckerö Link. Here the RoPax will replace FJÄRDVÄGEN, built in 1972, on the route between Långnäs and Naantali.
Eckerö Group states a press release that the acquisition of SAILOR allows Eckerö Link to offer greater capacity, improved energy efficiency, and opportunities for future development of both freight and passenger services. This strengthens Åland’s role as a hub for maritime traffic and creates new opportunities for both business and society.
“The connection between Åland and mainland Finland has long been the missing link in our offering. With SAILOR, we are now taking the next step to ensure a modern, reliable, and sustainable transport solution for the future,” says Björn Blomqvist, CEO of the Eckerö Group.
Eckerö Link focuses on integrating freight traffic and logistics solutions within the group’s structure, benefiting both businesses and communities. With SAILOR, Eckerö Link can further optimize fuel consumption, energy efficiency, and cargo coordination - factors that are crucial in today’s competitive and climate-conscious transport sector, the company points out.
“Our ambition is to be a reliable partner for the sea transport of the future, with strong local roots and a global perspective. With SAILOR, we strengthen our position and can meet future challenges and opportunities,” says Jonas Henriksson, CEO of Eckerö Link AB.
