Candela secures 10-ship deal in Thailand
High-speedAt a ceremony in Bangkok, Swedish hydrofoil ferry manufacturer Candela and Thai operator Seudamgo by Leopard Transportation Co., Ltd. signed an agreement for ten Candela P-12 electric hydrofoil ferries to operate between the mainland and Koh Kood in Trat province.
The Candela P-12 uses underwater wings to lift the vessel above the surface, reducing drag and emissions. Compared with conventional petrol-powered speedboats currently serving the route, the P-12 produces no noise, wake, or exhaust, helping protect marine ecosystems and the island’s natural environment.
The signing took place during the SX Sustainability Expo in Bangkok and was attended by officials from Trat province, the Ministry of Transport, and the Swedish Embassy.
Each ferry can carry 20 passengers and cruise at over 25 knots, completing the 20-nautical-mile crossing in about 40 minutes. Powered by twin electric motors and large battery packs, the P-12 consumes up to 80% less energy than conventional vessels and can be charged using solar power.
The fleet will provide quieter, smoother crossings for passengers, thanks to an automated flight control system that stabilises the boat in varying sea conditions.
According to Leopard Transportation CEO Surachai Suwanthanakul, the introduction of electric hydrofoil ferries marks “a step towards sustainable, low-impact transport for Thailand’s islands.”
Candela CEO Gustav Hasselskog noted that the partnership “shows how Thailand can move directly to clean, efficient water transport by replacing polluting speedboats with electric vessels.”
Thailand hosts Candela’s largest office outside Sweden, reflecting its importance as a growing market for sustainable marine transport.
