Astilleros Armón starts the construction of two Baleària electric fast ferries linking Spain and Morocco
High-speedAstilleros Armón (Gijón) has started construction of two 100% electric fast ferries for Baleària, which will operate the Tarifa–Tanger City route from 2027, making this line the first maritime green corridor between Spain and Morocco.
The twin catamarans, named MAROC 2030 and ESPANA 2030, will each be equipped with an electric power of 16 MW and batteries with a capacity of 13,000 kWh, enabling them to complete the entire 18-nautical-mile crossing exclusively on electricity.
The project, a result of public-private collaboration, also includes the electrification of the ports of Tarifa and Tangier City. Storage systems with batteries of 8 MWh gross each will be installed, supplementing the onshore electricity supply—5 MW in Tarifa and 8 MVA in Tangier. Additionally, fast-charging systems will be installed via two autonomous robotic arms connected to the ferries, allowing the batteries to be recharged in just 40 minutes during port calls.
The vessels' design, optimized for the operational characteristics of both ports, will offer capacity for 804 passengers and 225 vehicles, a maximum speed of 26 knots, and a T-Foil system to improve onboard comfort. The catamarans will also provide excellent maneuverability, thanks to ailerons on the bridge with integrated controls, two bow thrusters, two stern thrusters, and four rudders. They will feature two high-capacity stern ramps, designed to speed up operations and port maneuvers.
