Viking Line sells AMORELLA

Viking Line reached an agreement on 4 August 2022 with Corsica Ferries, regarding a sale of the 1988-built AMORELLA, with delivery taking place to its new owner in October 2022.

A sale of AMORELLA after VIKING GLORY was delivered is a long-decided step in the renewal of the company's fleet and will further strengthen the company's financial position and liquidity. The total sales price is EUR 19.1 million. The vessel's book value as of 30 June 2022 was EUR 3.2 million.

At present, the goal is for AMORELLA’s regular personnel to be offered work on the company's other vessels.

Northumberland ferries and Transport Canada charters SAAREMAA 1

Northumberland ferries (NFL) & Transport Canada will charter the Société des traversiers du Québec (STQ) owned SAAREMAA 1 to cover for HOLIDAY ISLAND which suffered a major engine room fire on 22 July between Caribou (Nova Scotia) and Wood Island (Prince Edward Island).

There were no human casualties following the fire, but the ship will likely not sail again in 2022.

Caronte & Tourist returns to Sefine for a Messina Strait double-ender

Caronte & Tourist have placed an order at Sefine Shipyard for a near sister ship to the 2018-delivered ELIO. Just as ELIO, the newbuild is designed by LMG Marin and will become 134m long and have a capacity for 1,500 passengers and 290 cars once delivered in the summer of 2024.

The double-ender, intended for the Messina Strait between Messina and Villa San Giovanni, will feature dual-fuel capabilities together with a large battery pack.

ECO ADRIATICA enters the Grimaldi fleet

With the delivery of the ECO ADRIATICA, the fleet of Grimaldi Green 5th Generation (GG5G) class hybrid vessels is almost complete. This is the eleventh of twelve eco-friendly ro-ro ships ordered from the Chinese Jinling shipyard located in Nanjing.

The ECO ADRIATICA flies the Italian flag, has a length of 238 meters, a beam of 34 meters, a gross tonnage of 67,311 and a service speed of 20.8 knots. The loading capacity of the seven decks – two of which are hoistable – is twice that of the previous class of short sea ro-ro ships deployed by the Grimaldi Group. The vessel can carry some 7,800 lanemetres of freight, equivalent to around 500 trailers and 180 cars.

Wasaline lifts turnover for the quarter by 165%

Wasaline reported that their half-year passenger numbers increased with 471% compared to last year, while the second quarter showed an increase of 583%. Half-year turnover increased by 132% and second quarter turnover by 165%.

The cargo traffic breaks record every month, with cargo units having increased by 14.3%.

The half-year result is the best since the start of the traffic in 2013 despite that for example the energy costs have increased by 81%.

The new RYUKYU EXPRESS 7 ro-ro vessel for Marue Ferry (A" Line) was launched at Naikai Zosen’s Innoshima shipyard in Onomichi, Hiroshima prefecture, Japan on 28 July 2022.

RYUKYU EXPRESS 7 has about 13,650gt (Japanese domestic gross tonnage) at a LOA of 191.00m, 27.00m in width, 22.70m in depth, and 6.97m in draft.

RYUKYU EXPRESS 7 is set to enter service on the Tokyo-Nagoya-Shibushi (Kagoshima)-Naha (Okinawa) route in January 2023. "Ryukyu" is another name for Okinawa.

NORWEGIAN PRIMA delivered in Marghera

NORWEGIAN PRIMA, the first of six vessels from Norwegian Cruise Line’s (NCL) new Prima Class of ships was delivered at the shipyard in Marghera (Venice) on 29 July, at the presence of Harry Sommer, President and Chief Executive Officer of Norwegian Cruise Line, Frank Del Rio, President and Chief Executive Officer of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd, and Pierroberto Folgiero, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Fincantieri.

Along with her sister-ships, NORWEGIAN PRIMA will form the backbone of the future NCL fleet, at more than 142,500gt, almost 300 meters long, and accommodating 3,215 guests. Deliveries are scheduled through 2027, with the second vessel, NORWEGIAN VIVA, to follow next year.

Incat Crowther reported on the successful entry into service of Incat Crowther 30 INDOMAL EMPIRE. The 255-seat passenger ferry is operating services on the Malacca Strait between Indonesia and Malaysia and has been performing well in demanding conditions.

Built by PT Cahaya Samudra Shipyard in Batam, Indonesia, INDOMAL EMPIRE is operated by Indomal Express, requiring compliance with local rather than international regulations.  INDOMAL EMPIRE was specifically developed to cater to a segment of the market demanding lower ticket prices and subsequently less complex and yet still very capable vessels.

BIO-SEA ordered for cruiseship QUEST

French UV-C water treatment specialist BIO-UV Group has received an order to supply a low-flow BIO-SEA L-Series ballast water treatment system for retrofit installation to the 1268gt expedition vessel QUEST.

The 49m long, 60-passenger capacity vessel is the fifth passenger ship operating under Cruise Management International [CMI] to have specified a BWTS from BIO-SEA by BIO-UV Group partner TECO2030.

Gram Car Carriers signs 5-year TC for VIKING SEA adding USD 55.8 million of contract backlog

Gram Car Carriers announced that the company has signed a five-year contract with Zim Integrated Shipping Services Ltd. ("Zim") for the mid-size vessel VIKING SEA (4,200 CEU), until the fourth quarter of 2027.

The agreed contract has an average dayrate of USD 30,612 over the charter period, providing a total contract value of approximately USD 55.8 million.

Gram Car Carriers signs TC contracts for VIKING CONSTANZA, VIKING ODESSA and CITY OF OSLO

Gram Car Carriers announced that the company has signed a 14-month contract with a Leading Asian operator for the distribution vessel VIKING CONSTANZA (2,000 CEU), starting in August 2022. With this fixture, GCC is sold out for 2022 but still have 41% open for 2023 and 70% for 2024.

The agreed contract has a day-rate of USD 17,000 over the charter period, providing a total contract value of approximately USD 7.2 million.

Separately, GCC recently extended the contracts for the VIKING ODESSA (2,000 CEU), and CITY OF OSLO (2,000 CEU) with existing charterers both until the second quarter of 2023. The total value of the contract extensions for the two distribution vessels is USD 9.1 million.

WFW advises MSC on further state-of-the-art luxury cruise ship orders

Watson Farley & Williams (“WFW”) has advised long-standing client MSC Group (“MSC”) on the signing of a memorandum of agreement for two newbuilding LNG cruise ships, as it looks to expand its fleet of luxury cruise vessels under the Explora Journeys brand to six.

The two additional newbuildings planned – EXPLORA V and EXPLORA VI – are scheduled to come into service in 2027 and 2028 and will use LNG as a main fuel as well as green hydrogen to bring emissions down to zero in port. New LNG engines on board the vessels will tackle the issue of methane slip and will be equipped with industry-first environmental technologies and solutions. This includes a containment system for liquid hydrogen that will power a 6 MW fuel cell so that the ships can turn engines off in port.

Meanwhile the previously announced EXPLORA III and IV will be enlarged by 19 metres to enable the installation of new LNG systems. These vessels are due to enter service in 2026 and 2027 respectively.

DFDS to trial Rosslare-Dunkirk passenger service from 5th August

A new passenger service between Ireland and France will launch from Friday 5th August on the company’s Rosslare-Dunkirk route. Passenger travel will be introduced on a trial basis, as an addition to the existing freight service between the two ports. For the first time, DFDS will offer tourists a direct link between South-East Ireland and Northern France. The new service will be focussed on car and motorhome traffic at launch, with limited capacity to complement their freight traffic.

Ferries are an important part of the infrastructure in many areas of the world. And this is no different on Lake Victoria in East Africa. In order to reliably carry people and supply them with goods, one of the ferries has been fitted with new SCHOTTEL propulsion systems.

With an area of nearly 69,000 square metres, Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa—and a vital resource for around 30 million people who live on its shores. It is not only a source of water and fish but also provides them with transport routes.

Every day, almost 40 ferries travel across the lake between Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. One of these ferries is the SENGEREMA. Built in 1985, the vessel transports passengers and cars across the southern part of Lake Victoria seven days a week.

RoRo traffic via Sweden's new port Stockholm Norvik is steadily increasing. The port is now equipped with a new linkspan that significantly improves the loading and unloading capacity of the RoRo terminal.

Ports of Stockholm is investing in the RoRo segment and is building a large-sized new linkspan for rolling goods in Stockholm Norvik Port. It will give customers greater flexibility and a significantly improved loading and unloading capacity. Steel parts for the 146-metre long and 10-metre wide linkspan were transported by sea from Rauma in Finland.

The Trasmed ship CIUDAD DE ALCUDIA suffered a fire 1 August on deck number 5 while it was moored in the Port of Valencia, upon its arrival from Mahón. 

The reasons for the fire and its scope are unknown at the moment, but the company has already opened an investigation commission.

Five crew members were treated for smoke inhalation, but have been discharged.

Carnival Corporation Upgrading Global Fleet with Fuel- and Energy-Saving Technology

Carnival Corporation & plc announced the rollout of comprehensive technology upgrades called Service Power Packages across its global fleet to further improve energy savings and reduce fuel consumption. The upgrades include ongoing installations through 2023 on ships from the company's nine cruise line brands – Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Seabourn, P&O Cruises (Australia), Costa Cruises, AIDA Cruises, P&O Cruises (UK) and Cunard.

HEAT-FIT: The fire-retardant pipe jacket system by GF Piping Systems receives DNV, BV, ABS, and LR approvals

HEAT-FIT is designed to bring lightweight, corrosion-free, and efficient thermoplastic piping systems to essential applications onboard ships. Now, the fire-retardant pipe jacket system has been approved by no less than four of the leading certification societies in the maritime sector, DNV, Bureau Veritas, ABS and Lloyds Register. As a result, GF Piping Systems offers complete solutions that can be implemented throughout the entire ship and make the maritime industry more sustainable.

MacGregor signs a five-year service agreement with Color Line

MacGregor, part of Cargotec, has signed a five-year service agreement with Color Line. This agreement is an extension to previous contracts between MacGregor and Color Line and now includes all vessels in their fleet together with their Norwegian and Danish terminals. The order was booked into Cargotec’s 2022 second quarter orders received. The contract is effective from now until 2027.

AS Tallink Grupp Statistics for July 2022

In July 2022 AS Tallink Grupp transported 897 828 passengers, which is an 102.2% increase compared to July 2021. The number of cargo units increased by 17.8% to 32 700 units and the number of passenger vehicles increased by 46.6% to 127 039 units in the same comparison.

Over 1 million travelers with ForSea in July

The desire to travel is back and the Helsingborg-Helsingør strait is again crossed frequently, like before the pandemic. Homecation is here to stay, and the travelers are many. During the month of July, over 1 million traveled with ForSea. During one day in July, a record number of 28,228 shore travelers traveled, which has not been measured since a July day in 1996.

Deltamarin designs archipelago connecting vessel for Finferries

Deltamarin has been selected as the designer of a new Finnish archipelago connecting vessel which will start operating in summer season 2023. Finferries – Suomen Lauttaliikenne has recently signed a shipbuilding contract with Oy HL-metal Ab, that will build the vessel at their premises in Pargas, Finland.

First electric charging for commercial operators coming to the Thames

The first-ever, high-capacity, electric, shore power station for vessels using the tidal Thames is due to come on stream next year, in a deal engineered by the Port of London Authority (PLA).

Royal Caribbean Group reports second quarter 2022 results

Royal Caribbean Group reported second quarter 2022 net loss of USD (0.5) billion. Second quarter results were meaningfully ahead of the company's expectations driven by accelerating and strong close-in demand, further improvement in onboard revenue and better cost performance. Operating cash flow and EBITDA were positive for the quarter.

Cruise Baltic and consulting group COWI have joined forces to develop Sustainable Cruise Indicators that can be used globally to measure environmental sustainability in different cruise regions. With the new tool, measuring sustainability will become easier and more concrete.

Carnival Cruise Line announced adjustments to certain protocols to reflect the lifting of CDC requirements for the U.S. cruise industry, which will be made in phases, with the first of these updates effective on Thursday, 4 August 2022 and focused on short cruise itineraries of five nights or less.
