Shin Nihonkai Ferry launches new RoPax vessel KEYAKI on the Otaru–Maizuru route
FerryAt midnight on 14 November 2025, KEYAKI, the latest RoPax of Shin Nihonkai Ferry, departed from the port of Otaru, Hokkaido, to the port of Maizuru, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan.
KEYAKI was built at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ Shimonoseki Shipyard, and the 199.0 m–long vessel has about 14,300 GT (Japanese domestic gross tonnage) and a capacity for 286 passengers, about 150 trucks, and about 30 cars.
KEYAKI is the first ferry in Japan to adopt the latest energy-saving hull form, including a KATANA BOW and buttock-flow stern hull with ducktail. Propulsion resistance is suppressed by an energy-saving roll-damping system combining an anti-rolling tank and fin stabilizers. Together these innovations enable a 5% savings in energy compared to earlier vessels.
The interior of the ferry features open spaces including a three-story atrium at the entrance, elevators with clear walls and doors, and a forward salon with a two-story atrium. There is an open-air bath on the top deck and a multipurpose room for enjoying a variety of activities. A variety of cabins are available to provide maritime travel experiences that meet various needs.
Cabins consist of eight categories: “Suite” with a private balcony and facilities (2 passengers × 2 cabins); “Deluxe” with a private balcony and facilities (2 passengers × 16 cabins); “Japanese and Western-style State” with a shower and toilet (4 passengers × 8 cabins); “Western-style State” with a shower and toilet (2 passengers × 30 cabins); “State With Pets” with a shower and toilet (2 passengers × 5 cabins); “Tourist S” (1 passenger × 74 cabins); “Tourist A” (1 passenger × 44 cabins); and “(Truck) Driver’s Room” (1 passenger × 30 cabins).
KEYAKI and her running mate AKASHIA depart Otaru at 23:30 and arrive at Maizuru at 21:15 the following day. They depart Maizuru at 23:50 and arrive at Otaru at 20:45 the following day, as of November 2025.
KEYAKI’s sister, HAMANASU, is being built at MHI Shimonoseki and is expected to enter service in June 2026.
