Brittany Ferries marks 50 years of Saint-Malo–Portsmouth and 40 years of Caen–Portsmouth
FerryBrittany Ferries celebrated two milestone anniversaries on its cross-Channel network at Portsmouth on 17 June 2026, marking 50 years of the Saint-Malo–Portsmouth route and 40 years of the Caen/Ouistreham–Portsmouth route, alongside Portsmouth International Port, which is itself celebrating its 50th anniversary.
Since their inception, the two routes have carried more than 19 million passengers on Saint-Malo–Portsmouth and 35.4 million passengers on Caen–Portsmouth, representing half a century of mobility and exchange between France and the United Kingdom.
The Saint-Malo–Portsmouth route is today operated by SAINT-MALO, one of Brittany Ferries' recent LNG-electric hybrid vessels. Together with sister ship GUILLAUME DE NORMANDIE, which serves the Caen–Portsmouth route, these ferries represent a new generation of maritime transport designed to meet future environmental challenges, notably through their ability to connect to shoreside electrical power while berthed.
At Portsmouth, this momentum is advancing with the latest phases of the onshore power supply project. By allowing vessels to connect to the electrical grid during port calls, the infrastructure will help reduce emissions, recharge batteries and accelerate the decarbonation of port and maritime activities. It illustrates the complementarity between investments made by ports and those made by operators in pursuit of a shared ambition for the energy transition of maritime transport.
"The energy transition is under way and it is accelerating thanks to solid partnerships between operators and port infrastructure," said Christophe Mathieu, Chairman of the Executive Board of Brittany Ferries.
To mark the anniversaries, more than 300 guests embarked aboard SAINT-MALO on the day for an exceptional crossing around the Isle of Wight. The celebration was attended by Frédéric Pouget, Director of Brittany Ferries' shipping division; Steve Pitt, Mayor of Portsmouth; Mike Sellers, Director of Portsmouth International Port; and Christophe Mathieu.
