Papenburg-built FRISIA V to be scrapped in Papenburg
Ferry German domestic ferry operator Reederei Norden-Frisia has sold its 1965-built ferry FRISIA V for scrapping. Previously, a planned sale to the Costa Rican ferry company COONATRAMAR had fallen through.
Interestingly, the vessel has returned to her birthplace to be recycled, having sailed from Norddeich where she had been laid up since August 2015 to Papenburg in late November. She arrived at Papenburg on November 27 where her demolition will be handled by the local firm DA Schiffsverwertung. The latter has already scrapped the 1967-built costal passenger ferry WAPPEN VON NORDERNEY earlier this year and has now won the contract to demolish a bigger ship from the same operator.
FRISIA V had been built at Jos. L. Meyer Werft in Papenburg in 1965 and has been employed on the Wadden Sea routes between Norddeich and Norderney and Juist respectively almost without interruptions for almost 50 years. The ship is among the very few which have been “stretched” not only once, but twice. FRISIA V was rebuilt accordingly in 1972 and 1984.
