Brittany Ferries announces the inauguration of the LNG bunker terminal in Santander

Repsol inaugurated its LNG bunker terminal in Santander, Spain. The inauguration came one year after the commissioning of the Bilbao terminal. The two facilities, both equipped with a 1,000 m3 storage tank, were built following an agreement between Brittany Ferries and Repsol in 2019 for the supply of LNG to ships serving Spain.

The design of the terminals makes it possible to operate with any type of vessel. It also makes it possible to board passengers and deliver fuel at the same time, thus optimizing port operations and reducing emissions during port calls. The two Spanish terminals are co-financed by the European Commission under the CEF-Connecting Europe Facilities programme.

SANTONA, the second Brittany Ferries vessel to be powered by LNG, already uses the Santander terminal. By the end of its first year of operation, its estimated that its CO2 emissions will have been reduced by around 12,000 tonnes.

“We are in the midst of fleet renewal and LNG offers significant environmental advantages which constitute real strategic assets for sustainable development”, declared Christophe Mathieu, Chairman of the Management Board of Brittany Ferries. "To be able to exploit the full potential of our ships, we need to get closer to partners, like Repsol, who are building LNG infrastructures. That's why this second terminal in the port of Santander is so important for us."

Juan Abascal Heredero, Repsol General Manager in charge of industrial transformation and circular economy, underlined: "The commissioning of this new terminal, which we have just inaugurated, constitutes a new stage in Repsol's commitment in favor of the energy transition and the decarbonisation of the maritime sector. It also contributes to Repsol's objectives to reduce emissions to zero by 2050 and facilitates the LNG bunkering operations of Brittany Ferries in the north of the Spain."

With 150 LNG bunkering operations carried out for 32 different vessels in eight Spanish ports in recent years, Repsol has extensive experience in the field of LNG bunkering technology.
