Oceanbird completes installation and sea trials of Wing560 on TIRRANNA car carrier
Ro-roOceanbird has completed the installation and initial sea trials of its Wing560 wind propulsion system aboard the Wallenius Wilhelmsen car carrier TIRRANNA, marking a significant milestone in the commercialization of wind-assisted shipping technology.
The installation was carried out at Damen Shipyard in Rotterdam between 21 June and 24 June, after which the 230-metre vessel departed with the full-scale rigid wing sail installed. Harbor acceptance tests and initial sea trials were successfully completed by 1 July, confirming that the system is operational and ready for performance evaluation under commercial sailing conditions.
The Wing560 measures approximately 46 metres in height and 14 metres in width. Designed to harness wind as a supplementary source of propulsion, the rigid wing sail aims to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions on suitable trade routes. Oceanbird estimates that a single Wing560 installation can reduce a vessel's fuel use and emissions by up to 10 percent under optimal operating conditions.
Prior to installation, the vessel's design modifications received approval from classification society DNV, certifying that the system met applicable safety, regulatory and technical requirements for operation aboard TIRRANNA.
Oceanbird CEO Amrit Kaur Bhullar described the successful installation and sea trials as an important step in demonstrating the viability of large-scale wind propulsion for commercial shipping. The company will continue monitoring the wing sail's performance during regular voyages, with Oceanbird engineers sailing aboard the vessel for an initial period to collect operational data and assess efficiency in real-world conditions.
