BLACK WATCH passengers flown home to UK
Nearly 700 passengers from the Fred. Olsen Cruise Line's BLACK WATCH have been flown home on specially chartered aircraft after an onboard fire caused the 1972-built vessel's cruise to be terminated at Funchal.
Three of seven auxiliary generators providing on board power were damaged in an engine room blaze which was extinguished by crew last Friday. Initially two of four main engines were also affected but after these were restored BLACK WATCH continued to Funchal, its next scheduled port of call.
All passengers will receive a full cruise fare refund, as well as any reasonable out of pocket expenses. In addition, Fred. Olsen will offer a future cruise voucher of up to 50 per cent of the fare paid, to be used within its current cruise programme.
Mike Rodwell, the company's managing director, joined the ship in Funchal with a support team of senior executives. He said it is hoped BLACK WATCH will be able to undertake her next cruise, a nine-night Norwegian Fjord itinerary from London Tilbury on 8 July as scheduled.
