Armas Trasmediterránea to Operate Canary Islands–Cádiz Public Interest Line for Another Year
FerryThe Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, through the Directorate General of the Merchant Navy, has approved an extension for the Armas Trasmediterránea Group to continue operating the Cádiz–Canary Islands public service obligation line for an additional year. The contract will be automatically extended from 1 July 2025 to 30 June 2026.
Óscar Martínez, the corporate commercial director of Armas Trasmediterránea, emphasises that this extension is “a significant step” in ensuring connectivity between the Canary Islands and the mainland for both people and goods. He highlights “the vital role” of this public service obligation line for the transport of island residents and the economic development of the archipelago. Martínez also underscores “the shipping company’s ongoing commitment to providing a high-quality transport option for passengers and for exporting key Canary Islands products, such as bananas, in optimal conditions, alongside other goods.”
The Cádiz–Canary Islands public service obligation line is part of Armas Trasmediterránea’s commitment to consolidating its operations between the mainland and the Canary Islands from the port of Cádiz for both cargo and passenger services. This aligns with the company’s improvement plan to enhance service levels, meet passenger and cargo demand, improve competitiveness, and reduce transit times.
The line connects Cádiz with the islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and La Palma, with the CIUDAD DE VALENCIA ferry as the primary vessel, supported by a second ship, the VOLCÁN DE TINAMAR. Together, they provide a high-quality service in terms of operations and frequency, crucial for both trade and the transport of cargo and passengers. The CIUDAD DE VALENCIA has a capacity for 605 passengers, 240 vehicles, and 2,564 linear metres of cargo.
