Washington State Ferries’s ridership surpasses 20 million for first time since 2019
FerryWashington State Ferries achieved a major milestone in 2025, carrying 20,108,545 total riders — the highest annual total since 2019 and a solid recovery from pandemic lows.
Key highlights from the 2025 Year in Review include:
- Ridership reached 20.1 million (9.42 million vehicles/drivers + 10.69 million walk-on passengers), up significantly from 19.1 million in 2024 — a ~5% increase (nearly 1 million more riders).
- Operated more than 150,000 sailings (about 7,000 additional trips compared to 2024).
- On-time performance stood at 98.6% for completed sailings.
- Cancellations dropped by roughly 400 (to 2,222 total), with crew-related cancellations falling by nearly 70% — the fewest since 2020 — thanks to workforce investments and stability.
Comparisons to 2024 show clear progress in reliability and capacity:
- Ridership growth accelerated (5% vs. 2024's ~2.6% increase over 2023).
- Service expanded with added sailings on key routes and the full return to pre-pandemic domestic schedules years ahead of schedule.
- Fewer disruptions supported higher passenger volumes, especially walk-ons.
Other notable achievements included unveiling North America’s largest hybrid-electric passenger ferry (the upgraded WENATCHEE, with its now 5.7 MWh battery storage system, is expected to cut fuel use by 20%), partnerships for three new hybrid-electric vessels, workforce training (over 150 credentials issued), and strong community engagement (e.g., 687 whale sightings, 46 lifesaving events, and booming social media).
Overall, 2025 marked a highly positive year for WSF, with growing ridership, improved reliability, and advancements in sustainability — positioning the system for continued recovery and modernization.
