New RoRo vessel SKIPANES delivered to Smyril Line

Ro-roSmyril Line has taken delivery of its new RoRo freight vessel SKIPANES from the CIMC Raffles shipyard in Yantai, China. SKIPANES and her sister ship AKRANES are Smyril Line's first purpose-built RoRo newbuildings, designed together with Danish naval architects Knud E. Hansen specifically for the route linking Europe, the Faroe Islands and Iceland, with an emphasis on year-round North Atlantic performance as well as crew comfort and well-being.

"We are very pleased to have taken delivery of SKIPANES, which will strengthen our freight services in the North Atlantic. This marks a milestone in the company's history and an important step in the development of our fleet," says Jens Meinhard Rasmussen, CEO of Smyril Line.

SKIPANES measures 189.5 metres in length with a beam of 27.2 metres and a draft of 6.1 metres. The vessel has a gross tonnage of 30,301 GT and a deadweight of 8,400 tonnes, offering 3,300 lane metres of freight capacity across four decks. SKIPANES is powered by a MAN B&W 7S50ME-C10.6 HPSCR main engine delivering 13,300 kW, driving a controllable-pitch propeller for a service speed of 18 knots. The ship is also fitted with two bow thrusters and one stern thruster for enhanced manoeuvrability, and carries an installed battery system alongside methanol-ready alternative fuel capability, underlining Smyril Line's ambitions for a more sustainable freight fleet.

Both vessels are built with battery systems and shore power connections to enable emission-free port operations, and are methanol-ready, allowing them to run on e-methanol as Smyril Line's preferred green fuel solution once available — a design intended to deliver significantly lower emissions per transported tonne than the operator's current fleet while meeting all international emission standards. Together, the two newbuilds join Smyril Line's existing RoRo fleet — GLYVURSNES, LISTA, MIMER and MYKINES — as well as the combined ferry NORRÖNA, strengthening the operator's freight network across the North Atlantic, connecting the Faroe Islands, Iceland and mainland Europe.
