Trasmed cuts 16,600 tonnes of CO2 in 2024 through efficiency and sustainability measures
FerryTrasmed has significantly reduced its carbon footprint, cutting 16,600 tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2024 and projecting a further 15,700-tonne reduction in 2025 — the equivalent of removing over 7,000 cars from the roads each year.
Through a comprehensive energy efficiency plan, Trasmed has improved fleet performance both at sea and in port. Operational changes, including optimized routes, service rescheduling, and reduced sailing speeds, lowered fuel consumption by 11% and miles sailed by 12% without affecting cargo volumes.
Technical upgrades such as propeller polishing and low-friction silicone coatings have further reduced drag and energy use. In addition, the company connected to onshore renewable power (OPS) at the Port of Barcelona, where one vessel has already consumed 406 MWh since March 2025, eliminating emissions while docked.
These initiatives form part of the Grimaldi Group’s broader decarbonisation strategy across Europe. “At Trasmed we continue to sail with a clear course, reducing our carbon footprint and advancing towards more responsible maritime mobility,” said Miguel Pardo, Director of Institutional Relations for Grimaldi Group in Spain.
Trasmed is now investing in hybrid propulsion, alternative fuels, and expanded OPS connections across its fleet.
