The Swedish Transport Administration Receives Assignment For Continued Rail Ferry Traffic Between Sweden And Germany

PortThe Swedish Government has tasked the Swedish Transport Administration with taking measures to maintain continued rail ferry traffic between Sweden and Germany until 2031. Stena Line’s two vessels SKÅNE and MECKLENBURG-VORPOMMERN are the world’s largest rail ferries and operate on the route between Trelleborg and Rostock.

- The rail ferry connection between Trelleborg and Rostock is not only an important transport link – it is a strategic piece of the puzzle for Sweden’s supply capability and redundancy. As Sweden’s only remaining rail ferry line, we bear a great responsibility. It is gratifying that the Government clearly confirms the need to secure this connection – now and until 2031, says Malin Collin, CEO of Trelleborgs Hamn.

– Rail ferry traffic is an important prerequisite for meeting the Swedish Armed Forces’ needs for military mobility. Accessibility and robustness in transport infrastructure are crucial for providing and receiving military support and ensuring military units’ ability to move troops and equipment, says Infrastructure and Housing Minister Andreas Carlson.

The assignment to the Swedish Transport Administration is part of efforts to strengthen total defence and Sweden’s ability to provide and receive host nation support within the framework of its commitment as a NATO member. Vessels that can transport rail vehicles without transhipment, rail ferries, are essential for certain military transports. According to the Swedish Armed Forces, continued rail ferry traffic between Sweden and Germany is urgent.

The Swedish Transport Administration shall, after consultation with the Swedish Armed Forces and after obtaining input from the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB), take the measures they deem appropriate. The Swedish Transport Administration shall, in carrying out the assignment, engage in dialogue with relevant stakeholders. The Swedish Transport Administration shall report on the measures taken by 31 December 2025 and by 31 December 2026.

The Swedish Government intends to return to the parliament later in 2025 with proposals to enable the Swedish Transport Administration to enter into the necessary agreements for the implementation of the assignment.
