Steel cut ceremony marked the start of production for Fjord1’s autonomously operated ferries

FerryA steel cut ceremony was held at the Tersan Shipyard for four new zero (direct)-emission ferries for Fjord1. The ferries will operate autonomously on the world's first autonomous ferry connection between Lavik and Oppedal from 1 September 2026 to 2034, with the possibility of extension for up to three more years.

The ferries will operate with autonomous navigation and a high degree of automation of vessel functions that replace manual operations. Implementation of automation functions and autonomous systems, including autocrossing and autodocking will take place in 2027, while autonomous navigation will be implemented in 2028.

In addition, a control centre will be established on land, for monitoring and the possibility of remote control of the ferries.

The four new vessels will each have a 120-car capacity, and in addition to the environmental aspect of the contract with the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, there will be more frequent departures compared to the current offer.

Lavik - Oppedal is the ninth largest ferry connection in Norway with 1.2 million cars transported in 2022.
