Spanish ship reshuffle
FerryWith the end of the high season, various ferry movements have taken place in Spain. An overview.
1. The LAS PALMAS DE GRAN CANARIA of Trasmediterranea, which has operated between Almeria and Nador this summer, departed in early September to cover for other vessels dry-docking, and operated between Algeciras and Tangier-Med. She has since been named as the vessel that will operate between Alcudia and Ciutadella, commencing early October. With Balearia also operating on this route, it was understandable that Iscomar threw in the towel and withdrew.
2. Balearia's fast ferry JAUME III has moved to Algeciras, after completing its summer service between Denia and Sant Antoni (Ibiza). Apparently it operated at speeds closer to 22-24 knots which was no faster than some of the line's conventional ferries.
3. The NISSOS CHIOS, chartered-in by Balearia, will operate from Denia to Palma, via Ibiza this winter.
4. Balearia have announced that the Valencia - Mostaganem service was of great success this summer, carrying some 37,000 passengers and 12,000 cars re, they will continue to operate the route during winter, with 3 round trips per week. The ferry to be used will be the DENIA CIUTAT CREATIVA, with a capacity for 399 passengers and some 1,850 lane metres of freight.
5. Still awaited is news from Balearia as to whether they will continue with the Almeria/Motril service to Melilla this winter, and if so, with what vessel. The PINAR DEL RIO does not seem the correct vessel to operate as the Med can be quite rough in winter.
